On
May 15, 1875 a letter was sent to residents of Red Bud announcing
that a "limited partnership" bank "The Red Bud Savings
Bank of Ohlwine, Schrieber, & Company", had been established
by a group of businessmen of the community. The names of the original
partners were as follows: David Ohlwine, Charles Schrieber, Herman
Schrieber, William Schuck, A.L. Wilson,
William Guebert, Christian Guebert, Gotlieb Buch, Fred Stellhorn,
Henry Ratz, Herman Nagel, William Schroeder and Diedrich Liefer.
The bank began business on June 1, 1875 with $10,000 in assets.
David Ohlwine served as the bank's first president, Charles Schrieber,
Vice-President and A.L. Wilson, Cashier. George Parrott made the
first deposit on June 7, 1875, for $1,000. By the end 1875, the
bank had assets of $19,423.21. In 1895, a re-organization took place.
After Charles Schrieber's death, David Ohlwine resigned, and his
son Walter succeeded him as president. Herman Schrieber succeeded
his father as vice president and Henry C. Wahlmann became Cashier.
Walter Ohlwine died in 1924 and Herman Schrieber followed him as
president until he died in 1929. Albert Schrieber followed Herman
in office as president until 1964. Adrian Rathert who had served
as vice president and cashier for 44 years was then elected president.
Through the years many prominent citizens of this area have served
as directors of the bank. Many of the surnames of the original founders
are represented on the board of directors today. The family name
"Schrieber" has always been represented upon our Board
of Directors.
On June 10, 1919, the partners of the Red Bud Bank of Ohlwine,
Schrieber & Co. met in a regular annual session and unanimously
approved the authorization of the incorporation of the bank as the
First State Bank of Red Bud.
First State Bank of Red Bud became a member of the Federal Reserve
Bank of St. Louis in March of 1939, chartered as a state bank.
In 1985 Red Bud Bancorp, Inc. was formed as the holding company
for First State Bank of Red Bud and stock was re-issued under the
name of the holding company.
Throughout the years of service the bank has always been located
on the first block of the northwest corner of the town square in
Red Bud. In 1920, First State Bank of Red Bud moved from its first
banking house just east to a new building. The original banking
house was eventually torn down to make room for the drive-up window.
The new building housed the Schrieber Store among other businesses.
This building was remodeled and enlarged in 1963. In 1987, this
building was torn down and replaced with a more modern structure,
the current bank building.
